Street
Sport is provided free at various sites across Forth Valley. Originally
the programme comprised football only, but participants asked for
other sports as well. A hill walking club has been set up with Ramblers
Scotland. Walking equipment and transport are provided and volunteers
lead the walks. Sport tasters are offered at weekends including canoeing
and rock-climbing, and multi sports and trail biking are planned in
the near future.
The main
strength of Street Sport is the strong partnership of more than 20
organisations working together. Through the programme, one l7 year
old was selected for the Homeless World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa,
and three participations have been chosen for an expedition to the
Himalayas next year.
Here’s
what some of the participants have to say:
“My
family won’t believe it when they see me in the paper for
having achieved something. Normally I am only in the court pages.
I feel really good, it’s something to feel proud of for once.”
To tell
you the truth, I’m getting something out of this as well.
It’s the first time I’ve felt good about myself in years.”
